West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus
The West Nile Virus is an anthropod-borne virus that causes central nervous disease in horses, as well as humans and birds. Sudden death is not common with the West Nile Virus, but euthanasia or death are normally the result from other complications caused by the virus such as pneumonia, cellulites, neuropathies, myopathies and multi-organ failure.

The most common clinical signs include:
  • Muscle Fasciculations (muscular twitching of contiguous groups of muscle fibers)
  • Change in mentation (the process of thinking)
  • Weakness
  • Cranial nerve deficits
Mortality Rates are anywhere between 30% - 60% depending on the severity of the infection.
